Natural gemstones are one of the great wonders of nature. The precious stones -- diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds -- have been valued for their rarity for thousands of years. More recently, many of the semi-precious gems have become extremely popular, and loose gemstones of all types are more widely available for both collectors and jewellers. |

The traditional precious stones are valued not only for their rarity, but also for their brilliance, fire, color and hardness. Rubies and sapphires, for example, have a hardness rating of 9 on the Mohs scale, right behind diamond. Rubies and sapphires are in fact composed of the same material -- corundum. But rubies are always red, whereas sapphire gems are any color but red. |

Loose gemstones are produced in many countries around the world. Among the precious stones, South Africa is the main producer of diamond. Burma is most famous for rubies, though fine rubies are also found in Madagascar and Thailand. |

Loose gemstones are usually sold by the carat, where 5 carats are equal to 1 gram. Precious stones are often sold in weights under 1 carat, while some semi-precious gemstones can be found in sizes exceeding 100 carats. |

There are more than 100 different varieties of colored gemstones. Some varieties, such as lapis lazuli, have been known from antiquity. Others, such as yellow sapphire, are thought to have special healing powers. There are even some gemstones which combine two different varieties, such as the bi-colored ametrine which combines violet amethyst and yellow citrine in one gemstone. One of the most popular gemstone colors is pink, and pink gemstones include tourmaline, sapphire, kunzite and morganite. |

Colored gems are found all over the world, but especially in Asia and Africa. However, there are exceptions. The distinctive anadalusite was named after the Spanish province of Andalusia where it was first discovered. Apatite is found in Mexico and is known in Spanish as apatita. |
